MYFOXNY.COM - In a nationwide campaign, Major League Baseball and People magazine have joined together to nominate exceptional people who are serving the needs of their community in exceptional ways. The three finalists representing the Yankees ball club visited Good Day NY.

PETER BRADY FROM BROOKFIELD, CONNECTICUT

In 1998, Brookfield, Connecticut resident Peter Brady started volunteering as a part-time handyman for seniors in his church's parish community. He raked leaves, changed light bulbs, and fixed leaky faucets. Today, the Handy Dandy Man Ministry is an official nonprofit with more than 1,000 volunteers helping 400 seniors in seven greater Danbury towns. His ministry also includes performing Extreme Home Makeovers for the less fortunate.

CATHLEEN LAPORTE FROM NEW YORK CITY

Six years ago, Cathleen Laporte founded Athletes for Charity, a volunteer-based organization, to benefit disadvantaged youth. The organization works with professional athletes, sports leagues and teams, various sports professionals, foster care agencies and related organizations, as well as volunteers and mentors, to empower and support the development of underprivileged youth.

CURTIS HILL FROM NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT

For many children in underserved communities, owning a computer is only a dream. In 2002, Curtis Hill co-founded the non-profit Concepts for Adaptive Learning, which provides computer training, computers, tech support and free internet access to low-income families in New Haven, Hartford, Bridgeport and Waterbury, Connecticut. To date, the team at Concepts for Adaptive Learning has trained and given computers to more the 1,600 families.

The nominees selected based on those who did amazing work in their community. Nominees can be from anywhere in the country. These 3 finalists said they most identified with the Yankees - all are big fans of the Yankees.

HDHM wins People's All Star NY Yankee's spot

To all our 2,000 supporters of this HDHM Ministry,

HDHM is the Winner to represent the NY Yankees at home plate in Anaheim Calif July 11-July 14 at the MLB All Star Baseball Game.  I can not believe it, but with you and your friends voting aggressively since mid May, it is you we have to thank. Carol Ann and I are super excited as you might imagine.  We have no specific details on the trip other than we are in for a few surprises during the 4 day journey to Anaheim.  We will take many photos to share with you and all the other voters who made this happen.

To think, among over several thousand original applicants, and down to three finalists, we surfaced to the top of the pile.
Truly amazing and humbling to say the least.

The 80th Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports, in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and Sportsnet HD and televised around the world by Major League Baseball International, with pregame ceremonies beginning at 8 p.m. ET. Tuesday July 13, 2010.  ESPN Radio will provide exclusive national radio coverage, while MLB.com will provide extensive online coverage.

A special thanks to the one person who was the impetus behind this success, namely Monsignor Larry Carrol, who in 2000 was the pastor of  Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Brookfield CT. and strongly suggested I move forward with my idea upon my retirement from Nestle USA Feb 28, 2000. We raked two lawns with 10 volunteers, and the rest is history.

Without the Holy Spirit at the helm, we would not exist, so acting as His messenger, we are living His word each day.

Yes my friends and supporters of this HDHM Ministry, this is just one more "Feel Good Day" for the Boss Man.

Thanks for your vote of confidence, "WE DID IT"

PS:  If any of your friends or family members would like to join us on our journey, please have them e mail their name, home postal address, home/cell number, mentioning you as the referral, and we will place them on our impressive e mail list of 2,000 supporters.  Thanks.

Thanks to People Magazine, MLB and the NY Yankees for allowing us to be a part of this historical event
.

Pete's Repeats Special Auction April 13, 2006

A very generous HDHM donor has provided the Ministry with an opportunity to run a mini fund raiser with a silent auction.

SILENT AUCTION

clubs.jpg

A golfers dream. We have in our possession a new O'gio fully equipped golf bag along with 27 assorted golf clubs that will be going to the highest bidder when we close this bid process on Wednesday evening 6PM April 19.

The clubs include many graphite drivers, several putters, chippers, sand wedges, regular assorted irons with most coming with their own monogrammed covers. The avid player who donated the clubs either won, purchased, or was given to him as a gift. Some are new and some are gently used. There are 80% mens, and 20% ladies clubs. They are all in excellent condition. They will all be on display at the top of my driveway from now until Wednesday for you to come and check out at your convenience.

All bids are confidential and you will receive a tax receipt for your donation to HDHM Ministry.

The total value of this package deal is estimated to be approximately $1,750.00 and the bag alone is $350.00.

Nothing will be awarded as a single item. It is all or none.

Starting minimum bid is $400.00.

Thanks for your anticipated interest in this fund raiser to help the less fortunate clients of HDHM Ministry.

Van Donation Update February 1, 2006

Last week, a very generous donor provided the HDHM Ministry with a free Van valued at $10,000 to improve the life of a most needy family. After the committee reviewed all 20 family profiles submitted, it was decided to grant this vehicle to a single mom who wrote the profile below. We have edited out any personal identification to protect her privacy. This was a very difficult task by the committee as all candidates deserved this vehicle but unfortunately there was only one unit. If you would like a Tax Deduction and would be willing to donate a working auto, we have 19 other families in need of vital transportation. Thank you.

Dear Mr. Brady and Selection Committee Members,

First, let me open by saying that the idea of some wonderful person donating such a vehicle blows my mind. Some day I hope to be on that end of the deal. By that I mean, to be able to help somebody’s everyday life in such a HUGE way.

Next, if there is a family who needs this right now more than mine, please make sure they get this gift, because God has always given me what I need when I needed it and so maybe at this time my need is not as great... but in case it is, here is my situation:

I do have a car at present. It is an old car with 168,000 miles on it. I was told recently by the mechanic that my transmission is going and that I should start to look for something else. The problem is that I need either a wagon or mini van because my wheel chair has to be kept in the back and it is too difficult for me to lift in or out of a trunk. Additionally, a wonderful woman died and left her electric scooter to me which has made my life much easier. I can now do my own errands, scoot my way around my daughter’s campus during parents’ weekend and even go shopping on my own. However, in order to fit the scooter into the back of my wagon, we have to remove the seat and the basket, which is fine when I am not alone, but I cannot seem to manage the assembly by myself because of the limitations in my hands, making me dependent again (ugh!). The mini van would solve this problem, because it could be rolled up a ramp into the back fully assembled.

Also, this van has power locks and windows which are more then a convenience for me. I can not always roll down manual windows making it very difficult when approaching a toll. The second problem is that we exist solely on my social security check. I am now trying to work part-time because with my daughter turning 18, the amount I receive monthly has been reduced, leaving not enough to cover living expenses. Physically I can not do much for too long but thankfully I can work some. There is just absolutely no extra money to buy a car. This would be a God-send.

I am a single mom with two teenagers. The oldest is away enjoying her first year at college, (she received a full scholarship for high grades and financial need) the younger is enduring his first year of high school. I was injured more than 11 years ago in a car accident and suffered a spinal cord injury which left me as a quadriplegic, but I function independently. I can walk, for short distances with the aid of a cane and drive, as long as it is an automatic. My hands are very limited, but I have all kinds of gadgets to aid me in everyday life and when there is no gadget, I have my children. For most of the years since my injury, my daughter was my “Home Health Care Aid. Now that she is gone off to college my son has tried to step into that role. It is a time of great adjustments and we are both putting forth our best effort although at times it is trying!

If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

Thank you for doing all the great things that you do.
